We would also like to thank PWI for inviting Andrew and Stephen along to present on behalf of Middleton Group.
Middleton Group Harmonic Emission Compliance!
We were recently engaged to undertake independent verification of the harmonic emission levels at the point of connection for a large scale wind farm project, to confirm compliance within the acceptable limits.
Our team worked with the client to model multiple operating scenarios which considered the performance of the wind turbines along with various network configurations. The modelling was run to test compliance of the harmonic emission levels with the National Electricity Rules and if remedial compensation would be required.
The Middleton Group team was able to demonstrate the compliance of the harmonic emission levels and the level of remedial compensation that would be required for the project. We really enjoyed the close working relationship with our client and their support in completing the modelling within a tight timeframe.

Importance of Arc Flash!
The importance of managing Arc Flash!
If you are an owner or operator of high voltage equipment or low voltage electrical installation with a rated current of 800 Amps or more, then you should be aware and manage arc flash hazards when operating or maintaining your electrical asset.
Arc flash is a serious hazard that has the potential to cause death, serious injury, damage to equipment and loss of electrical supply. In order to meet the obligations under Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004, employers should identify potential arc flash hazards in the workplace, assess them and implement appropriate measures.
Energy Safe Victoria (ESV) who are the independent technical and safety regulator for electrical safety in Victoria recently published guidelines to address the risk of arc flash in the electrical industry and we at Middleton Group feel this is an important document to share across our network to ensure all relevant parties are aware.
At Middleton Group, we are passionate and committed to raise the safety standard in the electrical industry. We have helped a number of clients assess Arc Flash hazards at multiple sites around Australia and recommend appropriate controls to address the risk.
From everyone at Middleton Group we would like to wish you a very Merry Christmas!
We hope you have a great day with family and friends.

Staff Spotlight #2 - Sudeep Lele
1. What attracted you to engineering?
It was a cultural influence… the options were medicine or engineering. I was never any good at biology 😊
2. What do you enjoy about working at Middleton Group?
It’s the team, the working culture and the leadership.
3. What do you see as the biggest issues facing industry in Australia?
At this very stage in Victoria, there is a massive spike in infrastructure spend… there are a LOT of road, rail and renewable generation projects underway and all of these have very ambitious timeframes. This is good news for all engineers but I believe all this hubris may potentially lead to cost overruns, inefficiencies and job market ‘bubble’. The engineering fraternity needs to be cognisant of these matters and follow a best for project approach.
4. What’s your vision for the future of engineering?
Technology that aids people in every possible way without trying to replace them. For example: it would be great having a self driving car but what fun is that?
5. Describe an ideal weekend?
A weekend with family and playing sports.
Staff Spotlight #1 - Guy Hodgkinson
What is your background?
Sixth generation Australian of English and Irish ancestry (and no doubt a mix of a lot of others!)
What attracted you to engineering?
My father was a High Voltage Linesman and we lived in a company house that backed on to his works depot, so I suppose there was a certain inevitability about it. I spent a lot of time with dad at the depot after hours and in his workshop, fixing and making things. He often spoke of the engineers he worked with and it sounded like fun, and something I might like to do. I discovered that to be one you had to enjoy maths, science and problem solving. I did, and so I became an engineer. That’s what attracted me. And really, after 25 years as an engineer, it’s what has kept me in the profession.
What do you enjoy working at Middleton Group?
People and projects. Professionally, nothing else really matters to me.
What do you see the biggest issues facing industry in Australia?
Competition for talent and the engineers supply pipeline. With many infrastructure projects either in development and delivery across the country, the pressure to graduate, recruit and retain talent will be extremely challenging. This to me has parallels with the recent mining boom in Australia, where competition for human resources to be able to complete the amount of work was incredible.
In addition, the centralisation of engineering and engineering services to the major capital cities I see as a big issue facing us. This adds more pressure on those large municipalities for housing, infrastructure and their overall liveability. Without better planning we will see the continued reduction in engineers and engineering, living and working in regional areas, and with that, a commensurate decline in the intellectual capacity of our regions. Less jobs and opportunities generally means less people, and thus less teachers, pharmacists, doctors, lawyers, skilled professionals. And that I think can only be to the detriment of all our communities.
What’s your vision for the future of engineering?
Our children. And encouraging those with interest and ability in STEM subjects to study them.
So my vision of the future? Lots and lots of young men and women enrolled in engineering and science courses working to become engineers, scientist, researchers and teachers. And to have these careers to be seen as the things to do with their lives.
Describe an ideal weekend?
I have a young child so at this stage in my life, any weekend that can include some of either motorbikes, friends, books and wine, with the odd cultural or sporting excursion thrown in, is a good one.
Internal Training Session - Victorian Rail Network
As part of our regular internal training program, Keith Middleton presented some of Middleton Group’s work on the Victorian Rail Network, including the Metro Tunnel Project, where Keith is currently embedded as MMRA’s Principal Power Engineer. Safety is core value for the team at Middleton Group. Our team currently operates in the transportation, power utilities and heavy industrial markets and we have realised that each market continues to enhance our collective understanding of safety. We endeavour to leverage this experience on every project. On a lighter note we are happy to report that two of our young engineers, Steve Overell and Abrar Aziz, have completed Lvl 2 First Aid course at St Johns Hospital. We would like to iterate that no one was hurt or injured while taking these photos 😄
Power Supply Upgrade Procurement Strategy
Recently, Middleton Group were given the responsibility of developing a power supply upgrade procurement strategy for one of our client’s upcoming programme of works – running until 2020-21. Guy Hodgkinson and Keith Middleton led this discussion based on decades of project management experience and local industry knowledge. In an interactive workshop with our client, we analysed the pros/cons of available contracting options , narrowed down the list of service providers that could be approached and discussed ways of rationalising the pipeline - thus making the offering ‘more attractive’ to the market. It goes without saying, that we are excited to be offered this opportunity and look forward to working with the client into the implementation phase as well. PS – The client’s name has been withheld deliberately.
Critical Upgrade Projects IFC
It has been great seeing young Abrar Aziz develop and refine his engineering skills under the guidance of Middleton Group’s technical leadership team working on the critical upgrade projects for Melbourne Water’s Brooklyn and Kew Pumping stations for CPB Contractors. Well done to the Brooklyn Kew team on delivering the IFC package.
